Refining pores and texture
How to smooth texture and reduce the look of pores with smart exfoliation — without irritating the barrier or falling for false promises.
The truth about pores
First, the honesty almost no brand offers: pore size is largely genetic, and no cosmetic permanently "closes" or shrinks pores. Be skeptical of any product that promises that.
What you can do — and it works — is reduce the look of pores by keeping them clear (less oil and debris stretching the opening) and smoothing the surface texture. The result is visibly smoother skin, even if the pore is still there.
The science of refining
BHA (salicylic acid). Being oil-soluble, it penetrates the pore, dissolves sebum and debris, and is anti-inflammatory. A 21-day clinical trial showed reduced oiliness and improved barrier and hydration with a salicylic acid gel.¹
AHA (glycolic, lactic). They exfoliate the surface, remove dead cells, improve texture, and stimulate collagen — leaving skin more even.²
Niacinamide. Helps regulate oil and improve the look of pores and texture.³
Retinol. Speeds cell turnover and improves texture and fine lines; in a meta-analysis of randomized trials, retinoids significantly improved signs of photodamage.⁴ Use at night only, starting slowly.
The texture routine
Rule number one: exfoliate in moderation. Start 2x/week and never use acid and retinol on the same night.
☀️ Morning
1 Gentle cleanse
2 Niacinamide serum — oil and pores.
3 Light moisturizer (gel).
4 Sunscreen SPF 30+ — essential, especially when using acids.
🌙 Night
1 Cleanse
2 BHA/AHA2–3x/week or retinolon other nights — never together.
3 Hydrating essence / serum
4 Moisturizerto calm after the active.
—On active-free nights: simple hydration to let the barrier rest.
Ingredients that refine
Salicylic acid (BHA)
Gets into the pore, dissolves sebum and debris; anti-inflammatory.

· ref. 4Do & Avoid
Do
Start exfoliation 2x/week and watch your skin
Sunscreen every day (a must with acids)
Introduce one active at a time, with a patch test
Moisturize to keep the barrier strong
Avoid
Exfoliating daily — over-exfoliation destroys the barrier
Using acid and retinol on the same night
Believing in "pore shrinking" — pores don't permanently shrink
Forcefully squeezing pores/blackheads
